BIVONA
Bivona stands in the Magazzolo river’s
valley, in the province of Agrigento. The city developed around
a hamlet dating from the 12th century, successively granted to Admiral
De Aurea who had a castle built nearby, which is reduced to few
ruins today. Over the centuries the village passed through many
hands, marriages and alliances playing a major role in this. In
the 14th and 15th centuries the city saw a remarkable growth, even
becoming a Dukedom.
Several buildings are worth-visiting
such as the Mother Church, likely dating from the 14th century,
and the Santuario della Madonna dell’Olio, in the city environs,
a popular goal of pilgrimages.
